ACL reconstruction programme
Dan, 27
- Took
- 10 months
- Cost
- £1,450 programme, paid at £165 a month
Ten months from the operation to ninety minutes on a Saturday
- Wanted
- Dan tore his ACL landing from a header in a Sunday league match, had the reconstruction in Wexbury eleven weeks later, and wanted one thing: to play again without being the player everyone is careful around.
- We did
- We saw him twice before the operation for prehab, then five days after it. Weekly sessions to week sixteen, strength on the rehab floor twice a week, and a running test at week fourteen that he failed (quad symmetry 64%) and passed at week seventeen. Change of direction from month six, testing days at three, six and nine months, and a report to his surgeon before each review.
- Now
- Cleared at nine and a half months with 93% strength symmetry, hop tests within 5% and no swelling after a full training session. Played 90 minutes in his first match back. Still does the Runners class on Thursdays because, in his words, he is not going through that again.

Post-op rehab, total knee replacement
Ruth, 66
- Took
- 12 weeks to the ridge
- Cost
- £420 joint replacement block plus £95 home visit
From a home visit on day five to the ridge walk she had given up on
- Wanted
- Ruth had put off her knee replacement for three years. When she finally had it, she wanted to walk the ridge above Otterford again, which she had stopped doing at 62, and she was frightened of the stiffness a friend had been left with.
- We did
- Callum went to her house on day five because she could not manage the car, got the walking frame swapped for sticks and the range moving. Weekly sessions from week two, then the rehab floor and the Over-60s Strong class from week eight. She hit 110 degrees of bend at week five and full extension at week six.
- Now
- At twelve weeks she walked the ridge, slowly, with poles. At six months she did it without them. She still comes to the Wednesday class, mostly for the tea, and has since brought two friends who were putting off their own operations.
03
Gait analysis package and shockwave
Amira, 41
- Took
- 8 weeks
- Cost
- £245 package plus £240 shockwave course
Two years of Achilles pain, found in ten minutes on the treadmill
- Wanted
- Amira had run for fifteen years and had spent the last two nursing an Achilles that eased and then came back every time she built up for a race. Two clinics, an insole and a lot of calf raises had not fixed it. She wanted to run the Otterford Half without limping the last three miles.
- We did
- Priya filmed her and saw it immediately: a very low cadence and a big overstride on the sore side, loading the tendon on every step. One cue (shorter steps, watching the cadence on her watch), a heavier calf programme than she had been given before, and, because the tendon was two years old, a three-session shockwave course with Tomasz. Re-filmed at week eight.
- Now
- Running her target 40 kilometres a week by week eight with no morning stiffness for the first time in two years. Ran the Otterford Half in April, pain-free, four minutes off her best. Kept the cue; dropped the insole.
