Freezing with liquid nitrogen destroys the top layers of skin so that a wart, a sun spot or a keratosis falls away over the following fortnight. It is quick and needs no anaesthetic, but it stings, it blisters, and it sometimes needs repeating.
What happens
- Dermoscopy first; nothing pigmented is frozen without a diagnosis
- Two freeze-thaw cycles per lesion, a few seconds each
- A blister or crust forms over the next few days and falls off within two weeks
- A repeat visit at four to six weeks if the lesion is stubborn, at £95
We do not freeze moles, ever: a mole that needs to go needs to be examined under a microscope.

- Moles or any pigmented lesion
- Large fields of actinic keratosis: photodynamic therapy treats the whole area
- Dark skin, where freezing often leaves a pale patch; we discuss alternatives
Insurance: Covered for warts and sun damage; not for skin tags. Billed directly: give Rosie your policy number and authorisation code and you pay only your excess.
