Excision is the right removal when a mole needs to be examined in full by a pathologist, when a cyst or lipoma has to come out whole, or when a lesion is too deep for a shave. It is done in our minor operations room under local anaesthetic by Mr Okafor, with the wound closed in layers to give the finest scar the site allows.
What happens
- Consent, photographs and a marked margin
- Local anaesthetic; the excision itself takes ten to fifteen minutes
- Dissolving stitches beneath and fine stitches on the surface, removed at seven to fourteen days
- The tissue goes to histology; the result is phoned to you within five working days
We are honest about scars: every excision leaves one. On the face it is usually a fine line by six months; on the back and chest it can stretch. Mr Okafor will show you where the line will run before you decide.

Recovery written as the record will read: what to expect on each day, and when Claire sees you.
- 01Day 0Home the same hour. Keep the dressing dry for 48 hours; paracetamol is enough for most.
- 02Days 2 to 7Shower normally, no baths or swimming. No gym, lifting or stretching the site.
- 03Days 7 to 14Stitches out with Claire. Tape the scar for six weeks if she advises it.

Within one working day of a photoClaire replies to the triage line with one of three words: today, this week, or routine, and the appointment that fits. Free.

If the histology is abnormal
Abnormal histology is phoned by the surgeon who took the sample, the day the report is signed, with the plan and a date. We do not post cancer results, and we do not leave them on voicemail: if we cannot reach you we keep trying and send a message asking you to call Rosie.
