Independent, which means we fit every maker and are tied to none, and nobody here is paid on what you buy.

The story
An empty shoe
shop, an
orange door
Alan Fenwick spent twelve years with a national hearing chain. He was good at it. He was also asked, every month, why his conversion rate was lower than the region's, and the answer was that he kept telling people they did not need hearing aids yet. In 2009 he took a lease on an empty shoe shop on Market Place, painted the door orange so his mother could find it, and put three rules on the wall: the test is free, the prices are on the wall, and nobody is paid on sales.
The rules have not changed. What has grown around them is the equipment (real-ear measurement from the first week, when almost nobody outside a hospital did it), the people (Priya from the NHS tinnitus clinic, Tom with his car full of test kit, Helen when the surgery stopped doing ears, Jenny and her bench), and the numbers, which we count every January and publish, including the pairs that came back.
Most of our patients are over 60 and most of them waited too long. So everything here is slow on purpose: an hour for a test, large print on every letter, a chair with arms in every room, a loop at the desk, and Sandra, who speaks clearly and repeats things without being asked. You should leave hearing the room again, and understanding what we did.

The 60-day promise
60 days
Wear any pair from us for 60 days, in every room of your life. Come back as often as you need. If they are not right for you, for any reason, return them for a full refund with no restocking fee. Paid monthly? The agreement is cancelled too. Last year 65 pairs came back and 65 refunds were paid.
Independence, stated
We fit the main seven makers and are tied to none. The price is by technology level, not by brand, so we choose what suits your ears. We fit Phonak, Oticon, Signia, Widex, Starkey, ReSound, Unitron.
On the wall
4 rules, unchanged
Painted on the wall behind Sandra's desk in 2009 and repainted twice since. They are the whole argument for coming here.
The test is free
Free if you are 50 or over or thinking about hearing aids, so nobody puts it off. Half the people we test are told not yet.
The prices are on the wall
Four levels, one price each, every maker, pair and single, care packages and pay-monthly. The same on the website and on the large-print sheet at the desk.
Nobody is paid on sales
Salaries only. The advice is the same whether you buy a pair, keep your NHS aids, or go home with clear ears and nothing else.
Real-ear measured, every time
Twenty extra minutes on every fitting so the aid delivers your prescription in your ear. It is why 91 of every 100 pairs stay out of the drawer.

12 Market Place: the cream shopfront with the orange door, level from the pavement, facing the market cross.
Sandra's desk, with the loop and the large-print price list on the wall.
One of the two test booths. The door is never locked and there is a window.
Real-ear measurement at a fitting: the thin tube beside the aid measures what reaches the eardrum.
Helen's ear clinic: microsuction under the microscope, no syringing.
Jenny's bench by the back door. Tuesday morning is drop-in; bring the drawer.
