Results and letters: when, and where

Everything comes to your Harbour Street Online account with a GP's comment attached, and by secure message the moment it is signed. Nothing waits for a phone call you have to chase, and nothing normal is left unexplained.

What arrives when

  1. During the appointment

    Prescriptions sent electronically; sick notes, letters and certificates written and handed over or emailed as signed PDFs.

  2. Within 4 hours

    In-house bloods (full blood count, kidney, liver, HbA1c, lipids) and urine results, with the GP's comment.

  3. Within 24 hours

    Laboratory bloods, sexual health screens and the Essential screen report. You get a message; the result and comment are in your account.

  4. The same day, if it matters

    Anything abnormal that needs action is phoned to you by the duty GP before it is filed, and a same-day appointment is offered.

  5. Within 48 hours

    Referral letters sent and copied to you; Advanced and Executive screen reports; cardiologist ECG reports.

  6. Any time

    Download or share any result, letter or vaccination record from your account with your NHS GP, a consultant, an employer or an insurer.

If something is abnormal

An abnormal result never sits in an inbox. The analyser and the laboratory both flag it to the duty GP's phone; the GP reads it, phones you, and offers a same-day slot or a referral before the result is filed. Out of hours, the on-call GP does the same. If we cannot reach you, we keep trying and we write.

Membership covers GP time; medicines, laboratory fees for tests beyond the annual screen, vaccines and certificates for third parties are charged at member prices. Annual membership paid up front is eleven months for twelve. Not insurance: it does not cover hospital care.

For employers, schools, care homes, hotels and other organisations that want their people seen the same day. An account takes a week to open, staff book through the board with the account code, and you receive one invoice a month by employee reference. Occupational health referrals from HR go to Dr Bell and are seen within two working days.

11Questions patients ask

Before you book

Ask for a same-day slot before 11:00 on a weekday and we will see you that day, in person or by video, or the appointment is free. Last year we kept it 94% of the time in person and 100% including video.
Can you really see me today?

Most days, yes. The board shows every free slot for every doctor; if there is a time on it, it is yours. Last year 94% of requests made before 11:00 on a weekday were seen that day in person, and every one by video. Ask before 11:00 and if we cannot see you that day, in person or by video, the appointment is free.

Can you give me a sick note?

Yes. A private fit note is signed by a GMC-registered GP and is accepted by every employer and university we have dealt with. It is included in any appointment, or £30 with a short video call. It covers from the day the doctor spoke to you; we can only backdate with evidence such as a hospital letter.

Will you have my NHS records, and will my NHS GP know I came?

We do not have your NHS record unless you bring a summary or give us permission to request one; tell the doctor what you take and what you have had. We send a summary of the appointment to your NHS GP with your consent, and we recommend it, so that the record is complete. Nothing is sent without your say-so.

How much does a prescription cost?

The prescription is included in the appointment. You pay the pharmacy the private price of the medicine, which for most antibiotics, creams and short courses is a few pounds and sometimes less than the NHS charge. For expensive medicines we tell you the price before you decide, and where an NHS prescription would be much cheaper we say so.

Do you see children?

Yes, of any age, and the 07:30 slots are kept for families. Babies under one are seen within two hours of the call. Dr Whitfield holds the diploma in child health and spent four years in hospital paediatrics. The children's line reaches a GP until 21:00 on the day you were seen.

Will my health insurance cover this?

Usually not for GP appointments: most UK policies exclude primary care, though some corporate schemes and add-ons include it. We give an itemised receipt to claim if yours does. Health screens are sometimes a policy benefit. Everything here is priced for paying yourself, and membership is the cheaper route if you come more than twice a year.

Which travel vaccines are free on the NHS?

Hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and the diphtheria-tetanus-polio booster are free from your NHS GP if they offer travel vaccination and you have four to six weeks. Yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, meningitis ACWY for travel and hepatitis B are private everywhere. We tell you at the consultation what you could get free if you have time.

What happens if something is serious?

If the examination shows something a GP should not manage, we say so and send you to A&E or call 999 from the room, phoning ahead with our notes. Last year that was 1.4% of same-day appointments. For anything needing a specialist, the referral letter is written before you leave and sent within 48 hours, privately or to the NHS through your own GP.

Harbour Street runs along the inner harbour from the station end of the quay. We are the navy door in the old harbourmaster's office, opposite the fish market steps. Screening, corporate and phlebotomy patients use the Quay Lane door around the back, which has the car park.

Sat-nav to WX7 2HQ. Screening and corporate patients turn into Quay Lane behind the building for the free car park; everyone else uses the drop-off bays or the Quay car park.
By bus
Routes 1, 4 and the harbour shuttle stop at Fish Market, thirty seconds from the door.
