What this is
Tinnitus is the sound with no outside source: ringing, hissing, buzzing, humming. One in eight adults has it. For most it is a nuisance; for some it is the thing that ruins sleep and quiet.
We will not tell you there is a cure, because for most people there is not. What there is, and what works, is a proper explanation, a measurement of your hearing (most tinnitus comes with a loss you had not noticed), and a plan: sound that takes the edge off, hearing aids where hearing loss is the cause, ways to sleep, and a way of thinking about the noise that stops it being a threat. Most people find their tinnitus is far less intrusive within three months. Last year that was 78 of every 100 who came.
What happens
- A long conversation about your tinnitus, your sleep and what it stops you doing; you score it on a short questionnaire
- A full hearing test, and a measurement of the pitch and loudness of the tinnitus itself
- Explanation: what it is, why it is not dangerous, why the brain turns it up
- A written plan you take home, and a follow-up at three months

What happens,

Nothing here is hurried. Each step is explained before it happens, and written down for you afterwards in large print.
Bring someone with you
Bring a relative or friend into the appointment; we encourage it. A familiar voice is the best thing to test with, and two people remember more than one.
The consultation
Conversation, tests, explanation, plan. Bring someone; it helps to have a second pair of ears.
Weeks 1 to 4
Sound at night, the plan by day. Most people notice they are thinking about it less, not that it is quieter.
Month 3, follow-up
You score it again. We adjust the plan or, if hearing aids are the answer, fit them with a tinnitus programme.

People ask
Is there a cure?
For most people, no, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. What there is, is a way to make it matter far less, and for most people that is close enough to a cure to be getting on with.
Will hearing aids help?
Often, if there is a hearing loss with it, which there usually is. Aids fill in the sounds you were missing and the tinnitus has less silence to sit in. Most modern aids also have a tinnitus sound programme.
