What this is
Blocked, muffled, your own voice loud in your head: it is often wax, and it is one of the quickest things we fix. We do not syringe. Microsuction uses a microscope and a fine, gentle suction wand to lift the wax out while you watch on the screen if you want to.
Before you come
Put two or three drops of olive oil in each ear, morning and night, for three days. It makes the wax soft and the removal quicker. Please do not use cotton buds.
Honest pricing
Both ears £75, one ear £55. If we look and there is no wax to remove, you pay £25 for the look and the advice, and we tell you what we think is going on instead. If your NHS GP surgery still offers wax removal, ask them first; many no longer do, which is why we started.

What happens,
in order
Nothing here is hurried. Each step is explained before it happens, and written down for you afterwards in large print.
Bring someone with you
Bring a relative or friend into the appointment; we encourage it. A familiar voice is the best thing to test with, and two people remember more than one.

The appointment
Twenty minutes of the thirty. The suction is noisy close up; some people find it ticklish.
Straight after
Hearing is usually clearer at once. Occasionally the ear feels a little sensitive for an hour.

The honest bit
- The noise of the suction can be uncomfortable for a moment; tell us and we pause
- Very rarely a small graze in the ear canal, which heals on its own; last year 6 in 1,000
- Hard wax sometimes needs a second visit after more oil, at no extra charge
- Brief dizziness if the ear canal is cooled; we warm the room and take our time

People ask
Does it hurt?
No. It is noisy and a little strange, and some people find it ticklish. If anything is uncomfortable we stop. We do not syringe, which is the method that used to hurt.
How often will I need it?
Some people never again; some every six months, especially hearing-aid wearers, because aids stop wax working its way out. We will tell you which you are likely to be.
