What this is
The NHS gives good hearing aids for nothing, and we say that on the door. But many people are given them in a busy clinic, cannot get back for adjustments, and put them in a drawer. That is the person this appointment is for.
What we can do with NHS aids
- Clean them, retube, new domes and filters
- Check they are working and that your ears are clear of wax
- Show you, slowly, how to put them in, change the battery, and use the programmes
- Test your hearing and tell you whether the aids are set about right
What we cannot do
Re-programme them. NHS aids belong to the NHS and are locked to its software. If they need adjusting we tell you what to say to your NHS audiology department so it is done quickly.
And then, honestly
If your NHS aids are fine and you just needed showing, we say so, and you go home £45 lighter and hearing better. If your hearing or your life needs something the NHS does not supply, a smaller aid, rechargeable, better in noise, an audiologist you can see next week, we show you the difference and the price, and the £45 comes off if you go ahead. Around half the people who book this appointment keep their NHS aids.

Yes. Plenty of people keep their NHS aids as a spare pair. Nothing about buying privately stops you using the NHS service, and we never ask anyone to hand NHS aids back.
