Plate II
Pregnancy & postnatal

45 minutes with Mei Lin: back, pelvic and rib pain in pregnancy, treated side-lying with pillows; a postnatal check at six weeks.
Within the week; third trimester within 48 hours
Plate II, fig. 1The plate
Pregnancy changes how you carry weight and how your pelvis moves, and for a lot of people that means low back pain, pelvic girdle pain or rib ache from about twenty weeks. Osteopathy can help with the aches and pains of pregnancy; treatment is gentle, done side-lying or seated with pillows, and never on your front after the first trimester.
We treat back, pelvic, hip and rib pain and the stiffness that goes with a changed posture. We do not claim to treat morning sickness, to turn a breech baby or to shorten labour: the evidence does not support those claims and the advertising rules for osteopaths say so. If you have bleeding, severe headache, swelling or reduced movements, that is your midwife or maternity unit, not us.
From six weeks, or once your midwife or GP is happy: a check of the pelvis, back and the scar if you had a caesarean, plus a plan for lifting, feeding positions and returning to exercise. Bring the baby; the room has a mat and a rocking chair.
81% of pregnancy patients reported pelvic pain easier by visit 2 (2025, demonstration data)
What should I wear?
Something loose you can move in. For a back or hip we may ask you to strip to underwear or wear shorts; we have shorts and a gown, a towel covers you, and you can keep leggings on if you prefer. You can bring someone with you. Say what you are comfortable with and we work around it.

Gentle osteopathy in pregnancy is widely used and considered safe when the osteopath is trained for it. Mei Lin has the postgraduate qualification and works side-lying with pillows, never on your front, and never manipulates the lower back or pelvis in the third trimester.
